Scholarship Luncheon, November 2, 2007

We award scholarships to area college students majoring in horticulture or related fields.  To finance these awards we hold what we have come to call a Scholarship Luncheon.  This affair is put on entirely by members.  They cook and serve the food, make the decorations, collect or donate items for a drawing and an auction and clean up after lunch.  This year (2007/2008) the luncheon will be held outside under the trees at Rancho Guajome Adobe, 2210 N. Santa Fe Ave. in Vista.  Lunch is served at 11:30 AM and tickets are $15.00.  Click here to get more information or order tickets via e-mail.  Provide your name and phone number and we will contact you.

Since this program started in 1994 the Vista Garden Club has donated over $37,000 to students of Mira Costa College.

The flower show, held at the Brengle Terrace Park Recreation Center,(1200 Vale Terrace, Vista) provides the public an opportunity to compete artistically and technically by showing their horticulture and floral designs. All amateur gardeners are invited to enter. The show is free and open to the public.  We refer to it as "Our gift to the community".

Horticulture

There are  13 sections and over 50 classes of horticulture into which participants may enter their specimens. The sections for container plants include flowering plants, those grown only for foliage, succulents/cacti and orchids. The sections for cut specimens include a great collection of the many varieties that grow in this area.

Design

There are over 40 displays of interesting floral designs in ten different classes.  The miniatures are always a show stopper.  The smallest is 3 inches or less in any dimension. The show is a Standard Flower Show and is judged by accredited judges and many awards are presented.

There is a Plant Sale in the Patio area from noon until 6:00 on Saturday and from 9:30  until 4:30 on Sunday.  Most of these plants are propagated and grown by members and are donated and  offered for sale to help defray the expense of the show.  This sale is a very popular community event.  It is organized and supervised by one of our members who is a professional horticulturist, and  can give reliable advice about the plants.  There will be more particulars available as the time draws nearer.
